How to Convert PDF to ePUB3 while Keeping the Format Intact?

As the world goes digital, publishers can no longer afford their customers PDF files as eBooks, given that the readers expect to access premium content online. It is little wonder then that publishers are taking the ePUB3 conversion route to digital publishing for their eBooks.

The ePUB format is easily accessible across a range of devices including mobile, tablets, notebooks and computers.

The ePUB standard is developed and maintained by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) and is endorsed by the Book Industry Study. ePUB3 is the latest version of ePUB, based on the latest HTML5 standard. The ePUB3 format is dynamic in nature and is supported by emerging technologies such as HTML5 and CSS3.

Since it is an HTML5 format, text can be hyperlinked to refer to both internal sections of the eBook and external reference links, for more information on the subject. ePUB3 also incorporates SEO capabilities enabling online readers to search content based on keywords.

ePUB3 Allows Two Types of Layouts - Fixed Layout and Reflowable Layout

1. Fixed Layout ePUB:

A fixed-layout format determines the size of individual pages in pixels and includes multiple images positioned precisely relative to the text. The font size cannot be altered in this format, making it an accurate representation of a printed page in ePUB format. When viewing on a small screen, you may need to zoom in and scroll both vertically and horizontally to read the text. This format is ideal for publications with a high graphic content, such as photo books, magazines, and comics, or for text that is formatted into multiple columns.

2. Reflowable ePUB Format:

This format is more suited for publications that have a simple, one-column layout and is text-heavy with small images that can be embedded between paragraphs.

This layout is accepted by most devices, given that the content ‘flows’ to fit the screen size. However, reflowable format limits the power of authors who have little control over how their content will be displayed. Besides, they are also somewhat restricted in the use of fonts.

Click on “Import PDF” and select the PDF document that you would like to convert when the import PDF dialogue appears.

Step 2 - Choose the Fixed Layout ePUB Template:

The next step would be to choose between the fixed and reflowable layouts. You can use the fixed layout format for the conversion.

Step 3 - Choose How to Import your Fonts:

The desktop publisher you choose should be able to handle fonts in various ways – import the font from your PDF, switch to similar fonts or use fonts from a URL.
